Competition Rules

The Orlando Music Institute (OMI) Online Junior International Piano and Guitar Competition is open to classical pianists and guitarists between four and seventeen years of age. It aims to introduce young musicians to friendly competition, allowing them to receive feedback for their performances from not only a listening public, but world class judges as well. The focus of the competition is on education, and individual feedback from world-class judges for all of our participants aims to move the education of the participants to the center of the event. The following official competition rules ensure a fair adjudication process.

 

Competition Categories & Participation Fees

  • Category A: Pianists and guitarists ages 8 and under

  • Category B: Pianists and guitarists ages 9-13

  • All pianists and guitarists ages 9-13 are welcome to participate.
  • Category C: Pianists and guitarists ages 14-17

  • All pianists and guitarists ages 14-17 are welcome to participate.

Competitors will have to meet the age requirement of the category they wish to compete in until up to and including March 22, 2015; i.e., a student who will surpass the age limit within the timeframe of the preliminary round will have to compete in a category with a higher age limit. Finalists will be asked to submit official government documents or other proof of age during the final round of the competition. The OMI reserves the right to disqualify competitors who misrepresent their age or are otherwise ineligible.

 

Competition Format

The Online Junior International Piano and Guitar Competition will be open to a global audience on the World Wide Web. All finalists will receive a trophy award as well as a profile on the competition’s website, recognizing their achievement. In addition, the first prize winner in each category will receive a cash prize. 

All performances by competitors will be shared on the OMI’s website through the YouTube video sharing platform. In this way, the competition will be open to the public, even though it will take place in cyberspace instead of a concert hall.

 

Competition Rounds

The number of video submissions required depends on the category of the participant. Category A will be considered semi-competitive, and contestants will only be asked to submit one video recording of competitor’s own performance. Contestants in categories B & C who advance to the final round will be asked to submit second video recording, different from their initial submission. Guitarists and pianists will be chosen by separate panels of adjudicators, with a first, second, and third prize awarded for each instrument in all three categories. 

 

Category A

  1. Preliminary Round: Competitors ages under 8 will submit a video recording of themselves performing a classical work(s). For more information on program choice, please see repertoire restrictions. The competition will accept submissions for a period of close to three months: January 1-March 22, 2015.
  2. Final Round: 12 video submissions by competitors from the preliminary round will be chosen for evaluation by internationally acclaimed musicians in a final round. These three internationally acclaimed artists will vote toward a first, second, and third prize winner for Category A.

 

Category B & C

  1. Preliminary Round: Competitors will submit a video recording of themselves performing a classical work (see repertoire restrictions). The Competition will accept submissions for a period of close to three months: January 1-March 22, 2015
  2. Final Round: Twelve competitors from the preliminary round will be chosen to compete in the final round. Once notified of their promotion, competitors will be given until May 1, 2015 to submit a second video, performing a different program than that of their initial submission. All competitors in the final round will have a profile on the competition website, including a photograph and brief biographic sketch. Three internationally acclaimed musicians will vote toward a first, second, and third prize winner in both categories B and C.

 

Required Submissions to Enter

Along with the entrance fee for the category they wish to compete in, competitors must submit an entrance application and a portrait photograph. All competitors will submit video recordings of themselves performing classical works of music. These are to be uploaded to the competition website the OMI.

Those competitors chosen to move on to the semifinal round agree to submit a second video recording with repertoire different from their initial submission for adjudication; i.e., works performed in the preliminary round are not to be repeated in the semifinal round.

 

Repertoire Requirements and Suggestions

In order to be as inviting as possible to pianists and guitarists of a wide variety of ages and levels of ability, there are no specific compositions or composers that participants must perform. The number of compositions participants may play per video entry depends upon the category they are in, bearing in mind that generally shorter compositions (such as etudes) may be paired with longer movements or compositions. One of the criterions of adjudication will be program selection, rewarding candidates for the creativity or uniqueness of their selection(s), or the pairing of complementary pieces.

While the repertoire requirements are kept rather general for all competition categories, competitor submissions must meet two basic criteria:

    1. The works performed must be classical works that are out of copyright. We cannot accept or adjudicate interpretations of jazz, pop, rock, or other musical genres. If you are unsure whether or not a work is out of copyright, use resources such as www.imslp.org or www.copyright.gov to guarantee that your submission will be eligible.
    2. The composition(s) performed may not be abridged or shortened in any way, with the exception of skipped repeats. For example: a student may choose to perform only a single movement from a sonata without repeats, but may not submit a recording of only the exposition of a first movement. Preludes and fugues from J.S. Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier are to be performed in pairs, and not individually.

 

Pianists Category A (up to 10 minutes)

Because of the young age of participants in this category, the repertoire requirements will be left free to the individuals and their music teachers. The following suggestions are intended as ideas and suggestions for music teachers and their young students, although students should not in any way feel limited to these works.

Young students may choose to perform single sonata movements or suite movements; piano pieces;  or other technically “easier to perform” compositions. These may include, but certainly are not limited to, the following:

  • Sonatina movements from Muzio Clementi’s Six Sonatinas Op. 36
  • Pieces from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Notebooks for Anna Magdalena Bach
  • Pieces from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Nannerl Notebook
  • Pieces from Robert Schumann’s Album for the Young
  • Compositions selected from anthologies for young students such as G. Henle’s Leichte Klavierstücke, volumes I & II
  • Béla Bartók’s Mikrokosmos, Sz. 107

 

Pianists Categories B & C (up to 15 minutes)

Pianists in these categories may choose to perform the same works as those listed in category A, but should also strive to perform works of a larger scale. These may include, but certainly are not limited to, the following:

  • Prelude and fugue from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier
  • Suite or sonata movements from composers such as Domenico Scarlatti, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, etc.
  • Individual character pieces, such as Preludes from Frédèric Chopin’s Op. 28, or Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen Op. 15

 

Guitarists Category A (up to 10 minutes long)

Guitarists in Category A may choose their programs freely.

 

Guitarists Category B (up to 12 minutes long)

Guitarists in category B may choose one or two pieces. Together, the performance time is not to exceed 12 minutes, and the works must meet the following criteria:

  • Piece from 16th – 18th century
  • Original work for guitar of Western-European composer from ca.1700-1850.
  • Any classical guitar composition of the competitor’s choice 

 

Guitarists Category C (up to 15 minutes)

Guitarists in category B may choose one or two pieces. Together, the performance time is not to exceed 15 minutes, and the works must meet the following criteria:

  • Piece from 16th – 18th century
  • Original work for guitar of Western-European composer from ca.1700-1850.
  • Any classical guitar composition of the competitor’s choice

 

Adjudication Process

Category A

The video submissions of 5 participants from the preliminary round will be chosen by professional educators and faculty members at the OMI to be evaluated in a final round. This final round will be adjudicated by professional concert musicians of international acclaim. Finalists will be announced on May 1st, and winners on May 15.

A variety of factors will be assessed in evaluating participants’ performances, including, but not limited to, closeness to the text, creativity, technical accuracy, and musicality.

 

Categories B & C

12 semifinalists and will be chosen by professional musicians and educators of the OMI’s faculty. Semifinalists moving on from the preliminary round—open to video submissions from January 1-March 22, 2015—will be announced on April 1, 2015. Those candidates advancing to the semifinal round will be given until May 1st, 2015 to submit a second video different from their original submission. The final round of the competition will be adjudicated by three internationally acclaimed concert musicians. Finalists will be announced on May 1st, and winners on May 15.

A variety of factors will be assessed in evaluating participants’ performances, including, but not limited to, closeness to the text, creativity, technical accuracy, and musicality.

 

Prizes Awarded

Finalists in all categories will receive either a plaque or trophy prize for their achievements, along with a signed certificate. In addition, all finalists will receive signed comment sheets from the panel of judges that they may refer to for advice in their musical development. First prize winners in all three categories will also receive a cash prize in the following amounts:

Video Requirements

Technical Specifications

While competitors will be judged on their performance and not the quality of their recordings, participants are encouraged to ensure that their recording has minimal distortion, background noise, and visual distractions. This can make it more challenging for judges to make a fair decision. Videos are not to be edited, i.e. all performances are to be recorded live. Participants are encouraged to submit videos with a minimum resolution of 720p. Recordings may have been recorded in front of a live audience, although they need not be.

All recordings should be made with a single camera, and done in a single take (i.e.: no editing footage). For pianists, the camera angle should be adjusted in such a way that the musician is filmed from the side, making both his hands and silhouette visible for the viewer. For guitarists, the camera should be placed directly facing the performer, showing both hands, the guitar, and head of the performer.

Along with each video submission, participants will specify what pieces they are performing, the name(s) of the composer(s), and from what edition or publication of the score they are performing. This information will be contained in the entry form filled out by all competitors.

 

Publication Consent & Disclaimer

By participating in the Junior International Piano and Guitar Competition, all competitors grant the Orlando Music Institute and its assigns and transferees authorization to copyright, use, and publish the same in print and/or electronically.

 

The Orlando Music Institute has the right to use all photographs, videos, and other forms of media of the participant with or without name or other identifier for any lawful purpose, including for example such purposes as publicity, illustration, advertising, and web content.

 

The competitors acknowledge the risks associated with publication of their images and videos on the internet, as the OMI is not responsible for unauthorized use by third parties.

 

By participating in this competition, competitors and their parents or legal guardians give Orlando Music Institute  permission to use and publish media, including but not limited to videos, pictures, biographies and other texts on websites, video/audio sharing platforms, newsletters, emails, etc.

 

The OMI reserves the right to make changes to the rules of the competition at any time. Should the number of participants in the preliminary round for any category be less than 50 participants by March 31, 2015, the deadlines may be extended.
